Curated by guest curator Dr. Olli Tapio Leino, New Playable Art showcases contemporary highlights from the overlap of interactive art, expanded cinema, and computer games, by digital natives grown up in computer game worlds. Presenting media artworks from Tabor Robak (Brooklyn-based game artist) and Douglas Wilson (Game research and designer) and 10 media artworks from local finalists. Fifteen artworks combine arts and technology to explore human experiences, from wish to dream to desire, and to express views the social and natural world, and to investigate the possibilities of media themselves.

Opening Film: You Are the Independent Power of My Eye

Veteran scriptwriter and critic Lam Kee-to now curates a programme of eight shorts from the many award-winning films – or stories - from the beginning of ifva. The story of ifva starts in 1995. So let’s revisit ifva’s very first gold award winning piece Long Distance by Vincent Chui and Alex Lai. Raman Hui, “Father of Shrek,” and Toe Yuen who is behind all McMug movies were indeed winners at the 2nd ifva. Throughout the years, many of the past ifva winners have made their names in Hong Kong’s cultural, or even entertainment, scene. We are having shorts by Pang Ho-cheng and Cheuk Wan-chi, nowadays pop icons, and works by Heiward Mak, Mak Yuen-yan and Yau Ching, whose efforts are widely recognised in their own remits. All together eight intriguing short films by nine engaging storytellers will offer audience the best from the ifva story.

Playing computer games in a cinema - that breaks all our conventional understanding about “movie going” and “game”. Is it a film? A MV? A game? A piece of interactive art? As long as you enjoy it, who cares!
Video Game Journey is a virtual world and a 35-minute interactive MV for Gatekeeper’s EXO album challenges our conventions regarding both music videos and computer games. Tabok Robak concocts an enticing alchemy of techno and acid house music, jaw-droppingly gorgeous rendered graphics and a speed-run through the levels he created. With the creator as their tour guide, the audience is taken to an immersive virtual journey from towering mountains to verdant forests through space stations and waterfalls.
