The 20th ifva Festival kicked off on 10 February with the exhibition CINEMA 2.0: HARD CINEMA. Loads of great programmes running over the next one and a half months. The results of the 20th ifva Awards – Media Art Category have been announced. The Gold Award has been withheld this year. Both APHASIA by Huang Yin-tzu (Taiwan) and The Fading Piece by Lau Ching-wa (Hong Kong) win the Silver Award, while The Best Local Work has also granted to Lau. The Special Mention goes to Surveillance by Zhou Shan and Long Xinru (China). The exhibition will be open to the public during the Lunar New Year holidays (Close on 19/2).

“Indie is…” Hong Kong independent short films 1995 – 2014

First in the series of “Indie is…” short film series – outdoor screening of the 1st ifva Awards Grand Prize winner, A Tragedy Ahead by Cheng Chi-hung has been successfully conducted last Friday, More than 60 selected gold awarded short films will be featured in the next 10 free screenings. Venues are situated across Hong Kong from the busiest central districts to the rural areas. They include Hong Kong House of Stories, Hong Kong Space Museum, Skyhigh Creative Partners A Jockey Club Initiative For Innovative Minds and Wong Ping Animation Lab, with aims to bring independent cinema to different districts and communities in Hong Kong, and to spark fruitful discussions.
Featured short films: Neon Goddesses by Chinese film director Jia Zhangke, Glowing by Wong Sau-ping Adam (Director of The Way We Dance), Lovers’ lover by Heiward Mak, Long Distance by independent film director Vincent Chui, Merry X’mas by screenwriter Jevons Au (Contributions include Don’t Go Breaking My Heart).

“Visceral Cinema: VR and Physical Interaction” Workshop

The workshop will focus on the use of VR system and physical interaction in future cinema, video game and virtual world production. Specifically participants will learn to use Unity, Oculus Rift VR system and Leapmotion controller in authoring cinematic scenarios, exploring various forms of cinematic viscerality as enabled with these newly available technologies.
Instructor: Ip Yuk-Yiu (Experimental filmmaker, media artist, art educator and independent curator)
Eligibility: Basic knowledge in computer, experienced in Multi-media software and VR system will be advantage.

DaVinci Resolve Color Grading Workshop

This three-hour workshop by ifva and Blackmagic Design explores this aspect of filmmaking with the help of DaVinci Resolve, a widely-used colour grading software in the industry. From basic concepts to practical uses, you will master the trick to turn an independent production into a professional masterpiece with minimum costs. One single footage of the sky can evolve into a romantic evening, a spooky night, a cheerful morning or a nostalgic afternoon as you wish, with the moods and atmospheres under your full control.
