Media archeologist Erkki Huhtamo
Master Class and Public Seminar

While moving image technology has progressed drastically in the recent years, its fundamentals go back several hundreds of years. They are still worth exploring - especially those that are still in use and being rediscovered. We have invited Erkki Huhtamo, pioneering media archaeologist, historian, curator and currently a Professor in the Departments of Design Media Arts, and Film, Television, and Digital Media at the University of California, Los Angeles, to tell the story of the early “illusions in motion” he has researched in a public seminar, and to search for the roots of media arts in the master class.

CINEMA 2.0 Surviving the Glass System: Media Art Exhibition
cum The 21st ifva Awards - Media Art Category Finalist Exhibition

This year, ifva joins hand with art.ware again to curate the annual media art exhibition CINEMA 2.0 with the theme around the concept of surveillance, bringing works from international artists Julian Oliver (New Zealand/ Germany), Adam Harvey (USA) and Björn Schülke (Germany) to explore the seemingly unrelated connections between cinema and surveillance.
Together with the finalists works of the 21st ifva Awards Media Art Category. These 10 media art pieces come from all over Asia including South Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The result of Media Art Category will be announced at the opening ceremony.

A creative film production scheme designed especially for ethnic minority youths in Hong Kong. Students continue to transform their stories through moving images. In six different shorts, it refracts the multiple layers of ups and downs, friendship, love, and students’ responses to happenings around them.
