In the modern everyday life, even the tiniest action is under surveillance. From CCTV, GPS to the face detection function on Facebook, all latest technologies leave people in complete exposure, which could all be discussed in relation to cinema.
This year, ifva joins hand with art.ware again to curate the annual media art exhibition CINEMA 2.0 with the theme around the concept of surveillance, bringing works from international artists Julian Oliver (New Zealand), Adam Harvey (USA) and Björn Schülke (Germany) to explore the seemingly unrelated connections between cinema and surveillance.
Together with the finalists works of the 21st ifva Awards Media Art Category. These 10 media art pieces come from all over Asia including South Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The result of Media Art Category will be announced at the opening ceremony.

Never stop watching good independent short film. Ten independent short films created by local directors: Being Rain: Representation and Will, The Food Fascists, Leave Them High And Dry, The Sea and Extras, one of the short film from Ten Years (2015). This is also the first release in the cinema for A Mother Lover, Midnight in Mong Kok – A Documentary, SOD-032, Everything’s Gonna Be OK and From Beavis (M) to Beatrice (F) (Oct 2015 Edit). Ten young film talents, with their cameras in hand, each telling a Hong Kong story of one’s style. Don’t miss them!

Asian New Category Finalist Showcase
Short films from all around Asia

Jurors choose ten most outstanding work within 391 Asian short films, the protagonists are rather ordinary: a Taiwanese who goes jogging because of insomnia, some Iraqi boys who have their football court taken away, a Turkish man who works as construction painter in France, and an Iranian man whose wife has cheated on him… Ten Asian new directors tell extraordinary stories with their distinct point of view.

Media archeologist Erkki Huhtamo

While moving image technology has progressed drastically in the recent years, its fundamentals go back several hundreds of years. They are still worth exploring - especially those that are still in use and being rediscovered. We have invited Erkki Huhtamo, pioneering media archaeologist, historian, curator and currently a Professor in the Departments of Design Media Arts, and Film, Television, and Digital Media at the University of California, Los Angeles, to tell the story of the early “illusions in motion” he has researched in a public seminar, and to search for the roots of media arts in the master class.
